Perceptions are the window to the world - to our surroundings and to other people.
Researchers from the philosophy departments of the three universities in the Ruhr region present optical illusions at the Dortmunder U.

From February 28 to April 6, 2025, visitors to the exhibition "Perceiving & Understanding - the World, Ourselves and Others" can explore the fascinating processes of human perception. The exhibition on the Hochschuletage of the Dortmunder U is organized by the MERCUR-funded project "SAPHIR - Systematic Analytic Philosophy in the Ruhr Area" with the participation of the philosophy institutes of Ruhr University Bochum, TU Dortmund University and University of Duisburg-Essen.

Perceptions are the window to the world
Perceptions are the window to the world - to our surroundings and to other people. We see, hear, smell and feel our world. But do we perceive it as it is, or rather as we want it to be? To what extent is our perception in everyday life influenced by thought patterns, prior knowledge and prejudices? What consequences does this have for our understanding of the world? The exhibition focuses on optical illusions, various perceptual effects and paradoxes. With exhibits to look at, touch and try out, the exhibition invites you on a journey into the secrets of our perception. You can test your own unconscious prejudices on site. All exhibits are accompanied by explanations of the theoretical principles and background. PC stations with videos and animations complement the objects.

The aim of the exhibition is to make basic philosophical questions about perception and understanding accessible to a wide audience. The exhibition is also suitable for families with schoolchildren. A guided tour can be arranged if you are interested. The exhibition is also accompanied by a supporting program with evening lectures. Further information on the exhibition, including opening times and venues, supporting program and registration for guided tours can be found on the official website. Admission is free.
